Serbia's Student List election win and fallout

IllustrationThe story so far
The Student List won Serbia's October 25 parliamentary election with 53 percent, while Aleksandar Vucic's Serbian Progressive Party received 39 percent. Vucic accused the winners of revolutionary terror, pointing to the resignation of the RTS director and the dismissal of senior editors. Citizens removed his portraits from municipal buildings. Prosecutors opened investigations into electoral fraud, and a commission is examining the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office.
In the days after the vote, Serbia saw detentions, resignations and probes. Vucic, now the opposition leader, said he was not afraid of arrest. Authorities jailed his former chief of criminal police, Marko Kricak, and another senior police official. They also detained Davor Macura, owner of Alta Bank, whose license had been revoked.
By November 5, Serbia's Ministry of Interior said nine active officers and one former officer were arrested over excessive force against students during last year's protests. It alleged they abused and tortured several people in a government compound garage in Belgrade in August 2025. The same day, an Air Serbia flight carrying Aleksandar Vulin and two senior figures was turned back en route to Moscow. Vulin, under US sanctions, said he was travelling to discuss extending a gas agreement, while Dusan Bajatovic denied the two would attend gas meetings.
